We Support Conservation Efforts
The Rio Negro (“Black River”) is the largest tributary of the Amazon River, and holds one of the biggest keys to its ecosystem health: the cardinal tetra. A community-based project called “Project Piaba” fosters and promotes the wild-caught fishery and market for these colorful fish to ensure the survival of the environment and the people who call it home. Wild-caught Cardinal tetras are common in the pet trade, and are safely harvested to be sold in pet stores all over the world. Every wild-caught fish that is purchased ultimately benefits resident fishing communities and environment along the Rio Negro. They provide the community with a source of income, educational opportunities for students, and a sustainable way to benefit the Amazon Rainforest.
Coral Reef CPR
Coral Reef CPR is the outcome of 25 years of research to understand the causes of the global coral reef crisis. Our studies on novel coral diseases, outbreaks of coral predators, and storm damage led to the identification of concrete actions that can enhance the resilience and conservation of threatened coral reefs. Through better management of human activities we are working to ensure that coral reefs can continue to benefit humankind while maintaining the health of our oceans. We have personally sponsored coral strings.
Nick Mayer Conservation Fund
Nick Mayer is an award winning nature illustrator whose style embraces the natural beauty of fish and other marine life with a unique scientific perspective. He is a former marine biologist, an adventurer, and a lifelong fly fishing addict. A skin of his teeth survival falling overboard off a commercial fishing vessel into the Bering Sea followed by a near float plane crash in Northern Labrador inspired Nick to pursue his true calling as an artist. Painting is his passion and he has developed a celebrated touch. He has done multiple bodies of works for charity.
We Support Captive Breeding Programs
Proaquatix provides an alternative to wild-caught fish, which helps to reduce human impact on ocean reef ecosystems, thus supporting reef conservation and the future of marine aquarium keeping.
Seahorse Source is a small family run micro hatchery for seahorses. By providing captive bred seahorses they are also able to play a small role in promoting seahorse conservation. High quality captive bred seahorses are easier to care for in the aquarium environment, and their ready availability reduces the demand for wild caught specimens.
New York DEC:
Lake Sturgeon Grow and Release Program
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the release of the final Lake Sturgeon Recovery Plan for New York.
“Lake Sturgeon have been listed as a threatened species in New York since 1983, and this plan will provide DEC and our partners with a clear blueprint to achieve recovery of this ancient fish within our waters,” Commissioner Seggos said. “This report is the culmination of dedicated work by our staff and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Cornell University, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, and others, including the New York Power Authority, since recovery activities began in 1992.”

Green Steel Straws:
Eliminating single use straws
Greens Steel was created in 2015 based on the realization that our single-use garbage was everywhere. Though we can’t tell you exactly when we started to take notice (perhaps it was with the birth of our first child;) we became aware of the vast amounts of litter, plastic water bottles, and disposable coffee cups that were being tossed about and thrown away. Our family was always diligent about recycling whenever possible, but as we started researching, we realized that recycling is not the best option… the best option is to reduce consumption, and reuse what we already have.
